Georgia Department of Corrections investigating Baldwin State inmate death

A GBI crime scene specialist was at the prison today collecting evidence

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Corrections is currently investigating the death of an inmate at Baldwin State Prison in Milledgeville.

According to GBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Mary Chandler, GDOC requested a crime scene specialist Wednesday morning at the prison to assist with the investigation.

As of 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, the specialist was still at the scene collecting evidence.

The victim has not been identified yet. The body will be sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine cause of death.

13WMAZ reached out to the Department of Corrections, who issued this statement: 

We can confirm an inmate death at Baldwin State Prison today. The death is being investigated by the GDC Office of Professional Standards, along with the GBI, as standard procedure. Details are not available, as the investigation is ongoing.
