Damon King, who was president and CEO of the Medical Center of Central Georgia for 28 years, died Monday morning.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said King died around 11 a.m. at the hospital he once led -- now named Medical Center-Navicent Health.

Jones said King was 81 and died of natural causes.

No funeral arrangements have been announced yet.

In 2014, Navicent held a reception honoring King on his 80th birthday. They released a statement last year that said, in part, "Damon played an integral role in creating Medical Center, Navicent Health as we know it today. When he took the helm of the Macon Hospital, it was on the verge of closure. Upon retirement, Damon left a world-class tertiary healthcare facility well prepared to advance into the twentieth century.":

King retired from the Medical Center in 1997, but remained president emeritus. He was replaced by Don Faulk.
