Fifth graders complete CHAMPS program

Macon students packed Mercer's Hawkins Arena Wednesday to celebrate graduating from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office' CHAMPS program.

Macon students packed Mercer's Hawkins Arena Wednesday to celebrate graduating from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office' CHAMPS program.

CHAMPS stands for "Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety."

Almost 2,000 5th graders spent 17 weeks learning about making better choices and avoiding peer pressure.

Lieutenant Tim James supervises CHAMPS for Bibb County. He says one goal is to let kids know law enforcement officers are their friends.

"I love kids, I have 5 of my own, and I think we cannot give up on our youth today. One or two bad things happen with our youth and we want to throw them all away. And these kids you'll see today in the program, they're fantastic," says James.

The CHAMPS kids also had a rollerskating party Wednesday night to celebrate.
