KATHLEEN, Ga. — Excitement is buzzing at Veterans High School where the Warhawk Raiders' Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps unit — also known as AFJROTC — is celebrating a major victory.
The team was crowned National Champions after competing in the All-Service Raiders Nationals held in Molena, Georgia, from Nov. 1 to Nov. 3, 2024.
They faced off against 22 teams from across the United States, showcasing their physical endurance, mental toughness and exceptional teamwork.
"We gave it 110% throughout every single practice, even when we were exhausted and things weren't going well," Senior Elizabeth Koenig said.
Since they started training over the summer, the Warhawk Raiders emerged victorious, claiming top honors in both the All-Service and Air Force Challenge Divisions.
It isn't the first trophy the AFJROTC unit received, but it's "the farthest we've come," Koeing explained.
The drills they practice are not for the weak.
"Throughout the season it gets easier," Senior Chance Anderson said.
After a pause, he clarified with air quotes, "Easier."
Koeing chimed in to add: "It's still hard, but we get faster."
This prestigious national competition brings together the best JROTC programs from high schools nationwide, challenging cadets in a series of demanding events, including obstacle courses, physical training and tactical exercises.
The Warhawk Raiders' victory is a testament to the hours of preparation, dedication and leadership shown by these students and their coaches.
Junior Max Zamudio, Anderson and Koeing are following in their leader's footsteps and helped guide their teams to victory.
"If possibly me, or one of my classmates can be a leader next year, maybe we'll be even better," Zamudio said.
The team’s victory marks another milestone in their growing legacy, as the Warhawk Raiders continue to set the standard for excellence in JROTC programs nationwide.
