'They need to do better': Macon mom upset her child was lost twice at Bibb elementary school

Jernisia and Anice Coger say their son Jalen, 6, never made it on the bus on two separate occasions at Union Elementary School.

MACON, Ga. — Jernicia Coger and Anice Coger Mosley are upset with Union Elementary School teachers and administration after their 6-year-old Jalen was left unwatched at school.

On November 17, Jernicia waited to pick up her son at the bus stop by her home. She says he never got off the bus. She called her mother, Anice Coger Mosley, who then called the school.

The kindergartener usually gets off the bus around 3:20 p.m. When Coger Mosley called the school, they went to find him. 30 minutes later, they found the child in the bathroom. Almost a week later on November 29, they couldn't believe it.

"They done did it again -- our baby is not on the bus. The children say they put him on the wrong bus," Coger Mosley said.

Both Cogers confirmed someone from the school is supposed to take him to his bus. His bus number is written on his school bag. When the bus driver noticed, they returned to the school and waited for the right bus to get the 6-year-old on.

"These babies are important.  It seems to me teachers are just not teachers anymore," Coger Mosley said.

13WMAZ reached out to the Bibb County School District and they sent us this statement:

"The Bibb County School District takes the safety and security of all students very seriously. Parental concerns brought to the attention of our schools and the District are fully investigated. Additionally, the District provides supports and accommodations based on students’ unique needs."

Coger Mosley told 13WMAZ the school was giving them different stories about what happened to her grandson. She says the school was made aware of his disability and didn't provide an IEP for him. They hope this doesn't happen and want the school to do better.

"I think that no child should be left alone. I think that they need to reevaluate their system of how these children are getting on the bus," Coger Mosley said.
