MACON, Ga. — Sonny Carter Elementary was recognized as a Lighthouse Academic Honor Roll School with Leader in Me.
This certification recognizes the school for its academic growth. Many of the faculty and staff are celebrating.
"This award was based on the state standardized assessment that all elementary schools take in grades 3, 4 and 5," Principal Latricia Reeves said.
Their standardized test scores are rising.
"We were at 52% and we are at 70% right now," Reeves said.
They appreciate being recognized for the work they are doing in students lives.
"Its so important for us to know that we are doing a good job here at Sonny Carter and knowing that we are equipping our students to be able to go out in the world and make a difference and impact the world," teacher Geneva Brown said.
It shows that students at Sonny Carter know how to shine academically.
"Our state standardized assessment is based on content mastery. So that means our students are showing academic growth in areas of ELA, math, science, so to experience that growth is really exciting," Reeves said.
5th grader Natalie Odom says she sees a difference
"I've made my goals. I've actually been getting higher grades than I normally would," she said.
