School of the Week: Macon County Middle makes history with their first mock election

Six students in the Principal's Advisory Council spearheaded the first mock election held at Macon County Middle.

MACON COUNTY, Ga. — In honor of election week, Macon County Middle schoolers held a mock election after learning about the voting process.

Six students in the Principal's Advisory Council spearheaded the project.

Principal George McElroy's advisory council was formed just two weeks ago.

"They're excited about learning, but they're also excited about leadership," he said.

Recommended to their current positions by their teachers, they're learning how it important it is to have a seat at the table.

In this historic election year, the middle school made history too and held their first mock election.

"We wanted to make sure the students were educated on the election processes. so the students decided we were gonna have a mock election," McElroy said.

The students played different roles during the mock election.

They had poll watchers, poll workers, ballot boxes-- even the teachers were a part of the process and counted the votes, but they didn't cast a ballot of their own.

Instead of impersonating the presidential candidates, Zy'Kerria Brown read the bio for the democrat and Nicholas Nguyen read the bio for the Republican.

Like several classmates, Baileigh Waters learned about what goes into voting. From the importance of keeping votes anonymous, election integrity and what you should and shouldn't bring to the booth.

"When I'm at the age to vote, I'll remember to bring my ID," she said.

At the end of the day, the administrators announced the winner of the mock election after tallying the votes.

Assistant Principal Kelley Jackson recorded a video of the announcement where you can hear children cheering from inside their classrooms.

"By a record," Elijah Roundree said. "Kamala Harris won 136 votes to Donald Trump's 35."

The kids say the results of the real election weren't what they expected.

"I think, when the votes were cast i think there was a lot of surprise," Nicholas said.

However, they're still learning important lessons this week.

"Our votes matter," Samuel Sebastian-Pascuel said. "It makes our voices heard from our perspective, making us a little bit more powerful than others."

"It's your opinion for who you want to vote for," Vritkunvarba Rana said.
