MACON, Ga. — Beyond the Halloween celebrations, this week was special for several Central Georgia schools honoring Red Ribbon Week.
It's all about educating people about how to not be bad to the bone. In fact, educators at John R. Lewis Elementary aren't sugarcoating the lesson as they teach students how to live bully and drug free.
Celebrations turned spooky where students learned about the initiative.
Students, teachers and administrators elected to be bully and drug free.
"No drugs, no bad stuff, no grown up drinks," are lessons fourth grader Kaliyah Walker learned about what not to do.
The reason they are committing to learning these lessons is "because drugs are bad for you," 9-year-old Joe Wygal said.
Students had a ball in the school halls where they celebrated the initiative.
"We've done so much here at John R. Lewis," pre-k teacher Lola Urbain said. "We had an all red day, a tacky day, we also did a lot of fall activities, dressing up."
"Since they're in pre-k we just did a whole bunch of activities," her paraprofessional Ms. Soloman said.
Red Ribbon week starts on Oct. 23; the last day is Halloween.
At the elementary school, they started celebrations this week and end on Friday, Nov. 1.
Everyone, from the kids to adults, is dying to have fun.
Counselors Latesha Dixon, Sundae Azaga and Media Specialist Diandra Walker dressed as the princesses from the pinkalicious series.
Almost every student dressed up in their costume for Halloween; they celebrated with a trunk-or-treat festival outside.
In addition to the fun, they're practicing safety and staying drug free.
Principal Adrienne Hurley said, "My husband supplied all of our red ribbon week material. He's a dea agent, so he supplied all the ribbons, all the pencils, all of that."
