LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. — For the second year in a row, East Laurens Elementary students teamed up to gather donations for a local food bank.
With the help of the Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the school collected over 700 canned goods, surpassing last year's total of 500. They delivered the donations to Joy Foods Ministry and helped restock shelves, providing support to people in need.
“Helping people get what they need, and that can make a big difference in their lives,"
Jackson Foskey shared.
The students called the experience "an honor," reflecting on the importance of helping others.
“It makes me feel very encouraged,” Marley Mullis said. “What if someday we need help? It’s important to know we’re here for each other.”
Teachers highlighted the lasting impact of this project.
“We strive to develop good service, character, and leadership in our students. When they learn this at a young age, it’s a lesson they’ll carry throughout their lives,” Shelby Gordon explained.
Gordon is the Beta Club leader watching over 26 students; they were selected based on academics and their character. Nicole Horton leads the FCA students; the group has 270 club members.
The canned goods collection featured staples like beans, spaghetti, soup, and ramen, ensuring families would have a variety of nourishing options, Jaqueline Franco explained.
“When I was young, I was always told that you can’t be blessed without blessing others,” De'Andre Abram reflected.
The success of this initiative has solidified its place as an annual tradition for East Laurens Elementary.
Teachers and students alike are eager to continue this effort, demonstrating the power of small acts of kindness to create meaningful change.
