MACON, Ga. — Imagine learning how to flip money through the stock market as a young kid to set yourself up for success later on as an adult. That's what some students at John R. Lewis Elementary in Bibb County are doing.
4th grader Kason Hawkins is one of many John R. Lewis Elementary School students who enjoy learning about the stock market.
"It's fun and doing something positive and staying out of trouble," says Hawkins.
Students enter their info into "The Stock Market Game" website.
"Once they put in their stock on The Stock Market Game, they watch it for a week and see how the stocks go up and down. They have a chance to go in and change which stocks they want so they can buy and sell just like they are really doing it," says Keisha Fleming, who teaches at the school and advises the program.
Fleming says students who opt-in to the experience enjoy it and grow like some of the stocks they watch.
"When they first started, they started buying everything. As we progressed, they looked at. Ok, this stock did good today, but let's look at what it did for three months," says Fleming.
They progressed a lot this spring. One of John R. Lewis's more than 15 stock market group teams won the end of spring stock market games. It's a district-wide competition.
Hawkins dreams of becoming a business owner and says learning how to use the stock market could help him achieve it.
"I can use money that I made in stocks to help my business," says Hawkins.
