WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The U.S. Department of Education selected 356 of their yearly "National Blue Ribbon Schools" — and one of the 10 schools in Georgia is located in Houston County.
According to the Houston County School District, National Blue Ribbon Schools "are led by leaders who articulate a clear vision of instructional excellence and uphold high standards."
Along with data-driven instruction and upholding high standards, they say the National Blue Ribbon designation is a prestigious award within the educational landscape.
In the eyes of the U.S. Government, Houston County School's Feagin Mill Middle School fits the bill.
Led by Principal Mark Sams, he said in a press release that the designation is a reflection of the hard work of the school's staff.
“I am truly honored that Feagin Mill has been designated a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School," Sams said. "This prestigious recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our exceptional teachers, who consistently go above and beyond to support our students."
Schools can receive the destination for two reasons: one, being an "exemplary High Performing School," which is among the highest performing schools based on standardized tests.
The other is "Achievement Gap Closing Schools," which gauges how well schools address achievement gaps between students of different backgrounds.
According to the school district, Feagin Mill was selected for its high test scores in the state.
But this is not the first time the U.S. Department of Education has recognized Houston County Schools with a "National Blue Ribbon" designation.
In fact, Houston County has had seven schools receive the honor, and for the past three years, they say at least one school from the district has made the list each year.
Previously, Warner Robins, Houston County, Centerville Elementary, Shirley Hills, Kings Chapel and Quail Run have been "National Blue Ribbon Schools."
The district is now ramping up for the annual award ceremony in Washington D.C. in November, which is where the school receives an engraved plaque and a flag to display.
"The students, teachers and administrators at Feagin Mill Middle should be very proud of this recognition," Superintendent Mark Scott said in the statement. "They continuously strive to create an environment where learning is engaging and where students leave Feagin Mill feeling prepared for high school."
