TWIGGS COUNTY, Ga. — People living near Highway 57 and Ridge Road call that intersection a disaster.
Buddy Long is the chief deputy for the Twiggs County Sheriff's Office. He said this area is a hot spot for illegal U-turns.
"They usually work that area pretty heavy because of that, people crossing the median like that. They wrote numerous citations out there for that," Long said.
Drivers coming off Ridge Road will snake through this intersection and use the wrong turning lane to make an illegal U-turn. One couple said it's because drivers don't want to go up the road towards Milledgeville just to come back west towards Macon.
People in the area said they've been having issues here for years. Drivers ignore the medians, make U-turns wherever they like, and they fail to yield to oncoming traffic.
This week, Long said there's been another problem. Drivers have reported flat tires due to spikes being in the road.
"In about a day and a half to a two-day time span, we got 11 reported. 11 vehicles with damage to their tires. Now that's the ones who reported it. I'm sure there were some that didn't," Long said.
People in the community were wondering if the spikes were placed there purposely to make people respect the median. The sheriff's office isn't sure.
"As far as the sheriff's office, we don't know if someone threw them out there, or did they fall out of a truck. At this point, we don't know that answer," Long said.
If the spikes came from a passing truck, Long believes drivers should avoid that area.
"If a big box of them fell off a truck, they could be scattered half a mile up that median you know so my best advise to drivers is I would not be crossing that median," Long said.
One couple said they think a stop light should be added to avoid any more problems.
