Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary cycling club celebrates national holiday biking to school

For National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day, the students in the cycle club at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary biked to school as a group together.

MACON, Ga. — Whether you're getting a ride to school or driving yourself, many of us agree biking and walking is a healthier route.

"It's a phenomenal and healthy way to get to school," Daylon Martin said. "We  have trails in the area; we have spaces in the area that can make some  space for kids to come and ride and improve their overall health and  well-being."

For National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day, the students in the cycle club at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary biked to school together.

Martin is the head coach collaborating with Principal Tawanya Wilson at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary.

Wilson is a product of Bibb County Schools; she went to Appling Middle School and Northside High School, graduating in 1985.

Martin, from Create Inc., based in Baldwin County, said his team's mission is to unlock our youth's potential through guidance.

"We  wanna help kids get more kids on bikes with the community's support,"  Martin said. "We can do that with principals like Wilson; we're able to  come to school systems and make a difference in kids' lives through  cycling."

Wilson said, Martin came and taught all the students how to bike, including the ones who've never rode a bike before.

As a group, the school kids biked to school from the Rosa Jackson Recreation Center to their school a few blocks away.

They started south on Maynard St., took Williams and Kitchens streets, and ended at the front of the school at the flagpole on Boone St.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office came along for the ride, escorting the group and blocking off roads for their commute.

Wilson said this was the second time the club biked to school as a group together with an escort, and she hopes the tradition continues.

Congratulations to Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary for being 13WMAZ's School of the Week.
