CRISP COUNTY, Ga. — While school sessions are wrapping up across Central Georgia, one district is already making major changes for next school year.
The Crisp County School District released a statement on its website last week announcing a change for the upcoming school year: requiring students to use clear backpacks.
The decision comes as a "proactive" step to "encourage safer schools and buses for our students, staff, guest and community in 2024-2025," the school said in their announcement.
Students will only be allowed to carrying clear backpacks at the district's primary, elementary, middle and high schools. However, the district did carve out exceptions for the district's Daycare and Pre-K Centers.
"As always, thank you for your continued support as we strive to provide the best and safest school experience for Crisp County," the announcement said.
The decision, however, does not affect the Crisp County Learning Center, which is a no-backpack campus.
Amid concerns over school safety, a number of schools in Georgia — many of them being located in metro Atlanta — have mandated clear or mesh backpacks.
In Central Georgia, some Bibb County schools have also mandated clear or mesh backpacks. The district requires them for all elementary schools, according to the district's elementary school unified dress code.
For other campuses, the district publishes their dress codes here.
