ATLANTA – Students in Atlanta Public Schools will be starting school later next year – 12 days later, to be exact.

The Atlanta Board of Education approved the school calendars for the next three years. The 2019 school year will begin Aug. 12, 2019. In 2020, Atlanta Public Schools will start classes on Aug. 10 and in 2021, classes will start on Aug. 9.

The 2018-2019 school year started on Aug. 1 of this year.

In each of the next three years, the last day of school will happen May 26, before Memorial Day. Students will get long weekend breaks in October and February for “teacher learning days.”

The district created the new calendar after surveying over 11,000 people in the school community, including parents, teachers and administrators.

A State Senate Study Committee is considering a proposal to push school start times after Labor Day statewide.

The Georgia Travel Association supports the idea of what it calls "sensible guidelines."

A schedule with more breaks during the school year is known as a "balanced calendar," which is now used by about 75 percent of public school systems in Georgia.

By law, Georgia school calendars must include 180 days of instruction.

The study committee must report its findings on or before December 1.
