MACON, Ga. — Bibb County deputies made an arrest in the murder of two men Friday.
A press release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office said investigators arrested 23-year-old Anthony Whitehead for shooting and killing 49-year-old Derrick Howard and 60-year-old Stacey Van Battle.
Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said a call came in around 12:22 a.m. Friday for two men shot at 3580 Fair Street. That's just off of Mumford Road.
The sheriff's office said witnesses reported two men were in an fight, when a third man came to them and held up a gun. The third man, now identified as Whitehead, allegedly fired shots, hitting both men.
Battle, who is from Macon, died on the scene. Jones said he was shot several times.
Jones said rescue crews started CPR and rushed Howard to a local trauma center, but he died there.
Whitehead was taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and charged with two counts of murder. He has a separate charge for probation violation of state court.
The sheriff's office said he's being held without bond.
This double shooting puts Macon past 2019's homicide total less than five months into the year, according to Jones.
The city recorded 26 murders in 2019. It’s taken fewer than five months to reach 27 in 2020.
A man shot and killed by police earlier in May counts in that total, because law enforcement shootings are classified that way.
The double shooting is still under investigation.
