DECATUR, Ga. — The suspect in a DeKalb County murder-suicide has been identified as a reserve sergeant, police announced.
On Sunday, the DeKalb County Police Department said that the suspect was identified as 38-year-old Michael Durieux. Durieux was a reserve sergeant with the Fort Valley Police Department. The department also announced that the victim was 37-year-old Christian Chestnut.
This incident stems from a Friday night shooting that closed down a part of a busy road. It happened just after 7:20 p.m. DeKalb County Police Department said officers were called to the 3000 block of Rainbow Road, where a man was found dead, shot multiple times. After speaking with witnesses, police said a second man had left that area in a black car and had crashed a short time later near Candler Road and Interstate 20.
Saturday morning, updates from police said the incident began as an argument between two men. Police said one of the men shot the other and then fled in a black sedan alone. In a Sunday update, police also said that the suspect, Durieux, was off duty and operating his personal vehicle at the time of the shooting.
When the man crashed, police said that he was found shot dead, adding that it was self-inflicted. Officers are still notifying the family, and the incident remains under investigation.
During the incident, Georgia Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed officers blocking the northbound lanes of Candler Road at Rainbow Drive near a Shell gas station.
