'I just asked Jesus to cover him' | Neighbors tried saving life of teen shot to death near Texas high school

Deputies are still searching for the shooter who killed 17-year-old Jake Mason.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Through both laughter and plenty of tears, 17-year-old Jake Mason’s friends shared memories Wednesday at the spot next to Cypress Lakes High School where the former student was killed.

"This just shouldn’t have happened," said DJ Jones, who was friends with Mason. "For real, for real."

Graphic cell phone video shared shows Mason’s body at the end of Brenwood Trails Lane and the frantic neighbors who came to his aid.

"Well, I heard the gunshots,” said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified.

She ended up saying a prayer over Mason’s body when it became clear he would not survive.

“I just asked Jesus to cover him with his angels,” she said.

The shooting happened around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said Mason was waiting to pick up his girlfriend. Some sort of altercation happened with other young men and that’s when shots were fired.

“I counted like 11 shells or 10 shells on the ground over there,” said another neighbor, who also wanted to remain anonymous.

He ran over to try and help as well. He's hoping those responsible are quickly found.

"Somebody knows who it is," he said. "And that somebody, these people, need to step forward and they need to say something.”

There’s only a vague description of the suspected shooter who was seen in all black clothing and possibly driving a black sedan.

Anyone with information should call the Harris County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.

Meanwhile, security was increased Wednesday at Cy-Lakes High School as a precaution.
