WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Warner Robins Police says a 24-year-old died Tuesday after a shooting off South Davis Drive earlier that day. An 18-year-old was also hurt in the shooting and was sent to a hospital.
Angie Nolls lives near the scene of Tuesday's shooting. She said the neighborhood is struggling with crime.
"This is a quiet neighborhood. It been quiet. But now, since everybody moving in here and everything, everything going on and it's awful," Nolls said.
Warner Robins Police responded to a shots fired call and were on the scene around 4:45 p.m. They said they found two men in front of this store suffering from gunshot wounds.
24-year-old Zephaniah Langston was shot in the leg, side and chest, and a few hours later he died at Houston Health Care's Watson Campus. Warner Robins Police originally said he was 15 years old in their original press release, but then later said the victim was actually 24 years old.
18-year-old Javon Charles was sent to Atrium Health Navient. He suffered a wound in his leg. Nolls said gun violence is ruining families.
"I know these guns out here is tearing a lot of mothers up because their children is dying at a young age and it's hurtful and it needs to stop," Nolls said.
Police Chief Wayne Fisher said after viewing the security footage, both men walked out of the store and started to shoot at each other. Just down the road is Warner Robins High School.
Tine Harvey said she's grateful this didn't happen an hour or two earlier during dismissal.
"I'm glad the school had already got out. Weren't no kids coming through," Harvey said.
The police said there were bystanders inside the store at the time of the incident. Harvey said the owner told her kids were inside.
"Four kids in the store. Four little ones and he told them please please don't do it in here please don't do it in here. Go out the door with it. Take it outside," Harvey said.
Harvey said she never thought this would happen in this neighborhood.
"I never thought I'd see the day where this would have to happen…in a neighborhood where my babies my kids were raised at for 15, 19, 20 years," Harvey said.
Warner Robins Police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide and aggravated assault.
They say they're still looking to question a group that quickly left the scene, but there's a flock camera pointing directly at the storefront. If you have any information about this incident, you can call Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 478-742-2330.
