BUTTS COUNTY, Ga. — A Butts County man attacked two sheriff deputies attempting to serve him an eviction notice, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations said in a press release.
Courtney Deonta Reeves, 30, sent two deputies to the hospital, but they are both expected to survive, according to the GBI.
They say it happened at a home on County Line Road.
"I want to make this very, very clear," Butts County Sheriff Gary Long said in a Facebook post. "If you assault one of my deputies and are fortunate enough to live another day, rest assured, when convicted I will do everything in my legal power to see that you spend every possible day in a State Prison."
When the deputies attempted to evict Reeves just after 9 a.m. Monday morning, the Jenkinsburg man did not go down without a fight.
While deputies were at the home, Reeves grabbed a machete and started attacking the deputies, the GBI said.
One deputy was slashed in the arm and has since been released from hospital, and the other deputy received a large laceration to his head and hand, Long said.
He said that the second deputy is still in the hospital but is in stable condition.
"In this profession, we go to work every day knowing that there is a possibility that we won’t make it home, but we are willing to risk it all to save life and property of those we serve," Long said. "These deputies are true heroes and true public servants, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers."
He says Reeves was taken to the Butts County jail.
The GBI — which is handling the investigation — says that the case is active. The case file will then hand the case file over to the Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for potential prosecution.
