Jones County coroner resigns after being arrested on 24 counts

Jerry Bridges is accused of 22 counts of theft by conversion and 2 counts of misappropriation of pre-needs tied to a cemetery he owns

GRAY, Georgia — Long-time Jones County Coroner Jerry Bridges, Sr. is free on $100,000 bond after an arrest Tuesday, according to Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece.

Reece says Bridges faces 22 counts of theft by conversion and two counts of misappropriation of pre-needs.

Bridges resigned as coroner after the arrest.

The sheriff says the charges are tied to Bridges' ownership of Cedar Ridge Cemetery. There were apparently a number of perpetual care graves sold in the cemetery, but the sheriff says the money in the account that is supposed to pay for the upkeep of the cemetery is gone.

Bridges owned a local funeral home for years before selling it recently.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office is still searching to see if there are more victims.
