GBI arrests jailer for putting pepper spray in inmates' food

BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — A Barrow County jailer has been arrested and charged for allegedly putting pepper spray into inmates' food, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. 

Lolita Lightner, 50, of Winder, was charged with cruelty to inmates and violation of oath of office. 

The GBI began investigating Lightner after the Barrow County Sheriff's Office reached out to the agency after several inmates were affected by a substance believed to be pepper spray that was reportedly intentionally put into their food.

Following an investigation, Lightner was taken into custody and booked into the same jail where she reportedly committed the crimes. Investigators believe she acted alone.
