With a new look and a new identity -- inmate number 788324 -- Stephen McDaniel began his life sentence in the Georgia prison system Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty Monday in Bibb County to killing his Mercer law school classmate and neighbor, Lauren Giddings.

He was released Tuesday from the Bibb County jail, after 1,025 days, and sent to the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison near Jackson. He'll undergo physical and mental examinations before being sent to another state prison.

McDaniel's mugshot and details of his sentence were posted on the Georgia Department of Corrections website.

The shaved-head mugshot is a far cry from the bushy-haired law student who wept for Giddings in June 2011, or the pony-tailed suspect in a suit who made numerous court appearances since then.

The state website also lists his weight at 125 -- 25 pounds less than when he checked in to the Bibb County jail on July 1, 2011.

According to his plea agreement, McDaniel is eligible for parole in 2041. The state parole board website lists "No Decision" on a tentative parole date.
