Georgia Supreme Court upholds life sentence of Milledgeville man in connection with 2017 shooting

Unanimously, the Georgia Supreme Court today disagreed with Malik Taylor's lawyers and said the judge acted properly.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Georgia’s Supreme Court has upheld a life sentence for a Milledgeville man connected in a fatal drive-by shooting.

In 2017, Malik Taylor was driving around town with three friends including Jyleel Solomon.

According to court records, all four were armed. Someone in the car opened fire at Malik Murray who was standing outside a home on Central Avenue and Murray shot back.

Solomon was shot in the head and died. Investigators charged Taylor and the other people in the car with felony murder, arguing that they were responsible for the shootout.

Taylor’s lawyers argued that he was acting in self defense. They claimed his trial judge failed to explain the self-defense argument properly to the jury.

Unanimously, the Georgia Supreme Court today disagreed and said the judge acted properly.

Malik Taylor is now in Dooly State Prison, serving a life sentence.
