NEWNAN, Ga. — A Georgia man has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to possession of a machine gun.

Drevion Evans, 24, of Lithonia, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. He pled guilty to three counts of possession of a machinegun and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking crime.

According to a press release from the United States Attorney's Northern District of Georgia office, Evans possessed semiautomatic Glock pistols that were illegally converted to function as fully automatic machine guns. He had also attempted to deliver one of those machine guns to his home, along with a pound of marijuana.

Machine gun conversion devices, aka "switches," are federally classified as illegal machine guns, according to the release.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, a patrol officer in Chamblee attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Evans on Aug. 15, 2022. Evans put his vehicle in reverse and tried to flee. He was ultimately arrested, and a search of his car revealed a .40 caliber pistol loaded with an extended magazine and converted to fire automatically. Evans had no prior arrest history and was released on bond.

On Oct. 20, 2023, Evans attempted to arrange the delivery of a second fully automatic pistol with an extended magazine to his home. He hired an Uber driver to collect a package from a Carroll County store. The driver picked up the package but delivered it to Carrollton police after noticing an odor of marijuana coming from the package. Police searched the package and discovered 16 one-ounce bags of marijuana and the loaded, illegally modified pistol - which had been reported stolen.

Officers in DeKalb County saw Evans’s vehicle 10 days later and stopped him for outstanding warrants issued by a judge in Carroll County. While detaining Evans, one of the officers observed a 9mm pistol with an extended magazine in the vehicle. This third firearm was also equipped with a machine gun conversion device.

Evans' case was investigated by ATF, Carrollton police, Chamblee police and DeKalb police.
