WASHINGTON COUNTY, Georgia — Editor's Note: This story has been corrected from saying the inmate grabbed the offers gun to saying he grabbed the officers pepper spray as confirmed later by the GBI.
An inmate is dead after being shot by guards from the Georgia Department of Corrections in the Washington County Hospital Emergency Room, according to Sheriff Joel Cochran.
Cochran says the inmate was brought in from the Washington State Prison for treatment after getting hurt in a fight with another inmate.
At the hospital, the inmate attempted to take the pepper spray from one of the guards and ended up getting shot. He later died from his injuries. The GBI is taking over the investigation.
13WMAZ has reached out to the Georgia Department of Corrections and the GBI for additional details on the shooting. The GBI says they will have a statement posted to their website later today.
We will provide updates when they are made available.
