The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is down in Wheeler County after an officer fatally shot a man Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office told the GBI that they were attempting to serve a bench warrant with the Oconee Drug Task Force at 106 Dry Branch Road in Glenwood around 1:15 p.m.

When they got to the house, they found 52-year-old David Wayne West outside. He took off on a four-wheeler and law enforcement began chasing him.

West then went into the woods and got in a fight with one of the officers. During the fight, the officer fired his gun, fatally wounding West.

The names of the officers involved haven't been released yet. The officer suffered minor injuries in the incident.

West's friend Luther Gillis said he wishes that the meeting with officers happened differently and that West was still alive.

"He paid his price and guess what? I can't change it. I wish I could," Gillis said. "What happened to him, guess what? It shouldn't have happened...I'll tell you what I'll cry and I don't cry."
