ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are investigating a shooting involving one of its officers Tuesday night just south of Downtown Atlanta.
Maj. Peter Malecki with APD said a sergeant was patrolling on Brotherton Street SW when he came across an "active vehicle break-in in progress." Malecki said the officer noticed glass on the ground and a suspect in the back seat of the car.
Malecki said the confrontation led to the officer shooting and injuring the suspect before being taken into custody. He was taken to Grady Hospital where he is in stable condition and expected to fully recover, according to Malecki.
Atlanta Police said that a gun was found on the suspect after he was detained. On Wednesday, the GBI identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Atlanta man.
The GBI described the encounter between the officer and the man similarly to the APD account, saying the officer gave "verbal commands to show his hands before firing into the car and hitting" the suspect. He then "got out of the car and was taken into custody," the GBI said.
Police confirmed the shooting happened on Brotherton Street SW near Forsyth Street SW, which is near the Garnett MARTA station in the South Downtown neighborhood. It is also near a Greyhound bus station and the Atlanta City Detention Center.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said they are investigating the shooting, as per protocol.
