KENNESAW, Ga. — A female student was shot and killed on Kennesaw State University's campus on Saturday, according to the university.
KSU said that a suspect in the case has been detained and that there is no threat to the campus community. The university police department is working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on the case.
This comes after KSU's emergency management said a person was shot following a report of an 'armed intruder' at the Kennesaw campus this Saturday afternoon.
The university's emergency management said at 4:43 p.m. that the suspect was no longer a threat to the Kennesaw campus. It also said to avoid the South Campus Housing area due to police activity.
KSU's Emergency Management previously posted to social media at 4:07 p.m. to alert the public about the safety concerns at its Kennesaw Campus. It asked people to seek shelter in a secure location until further notice.
Police blocked the area of Campus Loop Road near North Service Street for hours.
KSU Junior Alyssa Sanders said the alert startled her.
"Definitely getting a call saying it's a shooting on campus—that was scary," Sanders said.
Sanders said she's considering moving.
"I was looking for a fresh start because I'm from Chicago," Sanders said. "So, coming down here was like a getaway from the violence. So, I guess, violence coming back. It's like, should I move from Georgia?"
Sanders said she noticed the crimes have gotten scarier since the pandemic.
11Alive was there in January when a carjacking near the campus led to a report about an armed intruder, according to police.
And, back in 2021, an armed gunman showed up at an on-campus complex.
"Starting off 2020, here, you can tell the violence has definitely increased in Kennesaw," Sanders said.
Sanders said she doesn't blame KSU Police. She feels there is a bigger problem.
"It's not like they're not present," Sanders said. "It's not like they don't come when you call. I mean, I feel like it's the people."
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is also involved in this case.
