APPLING COUNTY, Georgia — A retired Georgia National Fairgrounds security officer was shot and killed on Sunday, according to a release from the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.
72-year-old Jonathan Terry Hayes was found dead at 1196 Henry Griffin Road in Appling County just before 1:15 p.m. on Sunday.
37-year-old Steven Lee Henry, a Baxley native, was arrested and charged with Murder, Aggravated assault, and Possession of a firearm during commission of a crime.
The Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry gave 13WMAZ a statement on Hayes’ death. He had been retired for more than a year.
“We are saddened to hear the news of Terry’s passing and we offer the deepest condolences to his family.” the statement said.
