HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — Janet Richmond said she didn't want to deal with the hassle of selling her car. Instead, she decided to donate it to Habitat for Humanity through their Cars For Homes program.
"It would be a lot for to them than it would be to me...the value of it," Richmond continued. "I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
Richmond decided to donate her 2009 Nissan Murano to Habitat for Humanity.
"A win-win. You know, I didn’t have to go through the hassle of selling the car, and showing it to people and doing all that and they got a little bit of money," Richmond said.
Bill Goggin is the executive director for Houston County’s Habitat for Humanity. He said Habitat accepts a wide variety of car donations.
"We've had a Mercedes donated and we've had some of them that were just picked up in somebody's yard with a tow truck, so whatever you have we'd be glad to take it," Goggin said.
It’s as simple as pulling up to your local Habitat for Humanity, filling out some paperwork and handing over your keys so that someone can get the keys to their new home.
Last year Goggin said they received ten car donations, which ended up bringing in an extra $15,000 to their construction fund.
"It’s certainly helpful I mean $15,000 is a lot of money and we certainly put it to good use. You know funding our construction budget and doing home repairs and building new homes for people in Houston County," Goggin said.
Richmond said she likes knowing where the money’s going.
"It’s local, the money stays local, the people that are served are local," she continued. "That was kind of a good thing for us knowing that it’s helping somebody here in the Middle Georgia area."
