'Impacts the quality of life': Mead Road waste transfer station approved after Bibb County Commissioners put it on hold

A month after a policy appeared to put a proposed waste transfer station on hold, Macon-Bibb P&Z approved the facility on Mead Road.

MACON, Ga. — Mead Road is home to Lynmore Estates and multiple industrial companies, and soon, it will be the site of a new waste transfer station.

Planning & Zoning gave Eberhardt Industries the green light to build it right across from a park and the main entrance to the neighborhood.

Habitat for Humanity's Executive Director Ivey Hall doesn't think residents would want to see it every day in their backyards.

"It’s not something that anybody would want to see across from their neighborhood," Hall said.

Habitat for Humanity has been working in Lynmore Estates for nearly 20 years.

"The Mead Road waste transfer station is something that we really learned about through their planning and zoning application just earlier this year,” Hall said.

Hall said Habitat for Humanity has been advocating for Lynmore Estates to help residents and protect their lifestyles including their park.

"You know lots of activities. Now they’re going to have additional trash trucks going by as they enjoy their time outdoors, so I really think it impacts the quality of life for the residents that live here," Hall said.

Eberhardt Industries waste transfer station was approved by Bibb County Planning and Zoning.  Hall said their homeowners weren’t too happy.

"Our homeowners were really disappointed," Hall said. "Many of them signed petitions that were presented to planning and zoning. It’s something they want to see.”

Since 2005, Habitat for Humanity has increased the percentage of homeowners in Lynmore Estates from 20% to over 60% and they’re not stopping because of the waste transfer station.

"We are not giving up our efforts in this neighborhood. While this is a decision that we opposed," Hall said. "You know an application we didn’t want to see go through; we’re going to everything we can to make sure this is still a really great place to call home."

Habitat for Humanity focused on holding Eberhardt Industries accountable.

"At this point, it's been approved by planning and zoning so our work will really switch over to making sure that they stay within the scope of that plan," Hall said.
