Civil War reenactment draws crowds on last day

A crowd took a step back in time this weekend at the Old Clinton battle reenactment.

A crowd took a step back in time this weekend at the Old Clinton battle reenactment.

Dozens of re-enactors showed up in their Civil War uniforms to recreate the Battle of Sunshine Church from 1864.

Crafts of the era were on display as well as food from the period.

Lindsey Hamrick of the Clinton Historical Society says this is their 35th annual war days performance.

She says they hope the reenactment brings history alive for the audience.

“If they understand where people have been in the past, perhaps that will encourage them to make better choices in the future,” says Hamrick, “so I think to me it's just the idea of educating and bringing something alive, so that people can understand that it's not something that is gone."

The group also participated in a memorial service in the Old Clinton Cemetery to honor Clinton's Confederate dead.
