POST FALLS, Idaho – Post Falls High School leaders have told their cheerleaders they need to make some changes if they wear their uniforms to school. Those cheerleaders said they feel like they are being singled out.
School District leaders said the "uniforms are not designed for sitting." They said the cheerleaders must wear leggings or warm-ups under the skirts. Cheerleaders can still wear the uniforms without pants underneath at school sporting events.
"It's like asking the football players to wear a skirt underneath their jerseys or something like that," said senior Cheerleader Shelby Hanson. "It's kind of ridiculous."
Hanson said she feels that the cheer team is being singled out. On game days, Hanson and her teammates wear their uniforms to class. The cheerleaders wore the same uniforms in 2014 but were not told to cover up.
"In my opinion, it doesn't look that sharp. I feel it looks more tacky," said Hanson.
According to the school district, the high school is enforcing this new policy so the girls can have a consistent look. The district says these outfits are designed for cheering on the sidelines, and not for sitting in class or walking up stairs. Acrobatics are still part of the Trojan cheer's repertoire.
Hanson said on Friday she plans on wearing her uniform without the leggings.
