90-year-old cashier spreads joy at Macon Food Depot

Frances Frost Thigpen says customers can't believe she's a day over 70

Most of us look forward to our golden years to kick back, relax and enjoy all the perks of retirement, but not Ms. Frances Frost Thigpen.

Shopping around Food Depot in Macon, you'll see a line start to form at register two, all because of Thigpen.

The way she hustles, you'd never believe she was 90 years old.

"They said, 'I don't believe it.' I say, 'You want me to show you my driver's license,'" Thigpen laughed.

She says customers can't believe she's a day over 70.

"This is my natural hair, and I think that has a lot to do with it," Thigpen said.

Frances says it's her customers that make getting out of bed every morning worthwhile.

"I love being around people, I'm not the type of person that likes sitting home alone," Thigpen said.

She says the holiday season definitely keeps her on her toes.

"We were real busy during Thanksgiving, you'd think that people didn't have nothing to eat nowhere, I mean it was busy," Thigpen said.

But she never turns away from a challenge.

"You get a rush when you really get busy, you know, you have what you call the line backed up. It's just something about it, when everything is going smoothly, and you keep pushing the groceries right on through the line, you know?" Thigpen said. "And they all get bagged up, and people keep moving right along just like there's nothing to it, and that just gives you a big rush that you can do that in a hurry and please people."

Melissa Beck is her cashier buddy and says days without her move just a little slower.

"I'll tell her the same... 'Was it busy today?' And I say, 'Well it wasn't any fun without you,'" Beck said.

Beck says their talks bring a ray of sunshine into the workplace.

Thigpen doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon.

"Not unless I have to," she laughed.

Thigpen works at the Food Depot on Houston Road.

She says she looks forward to bringing joy to all those around her for many years to come.
