All aboard!
In September, you can take an historic ride on a steam-powered train departing from Macon's Terminal Station.
It's called the Nancy Hanks Special, based on a real train operated by the Central of Georgia Railway. The program is a cooperation between Norfolk Southern and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum called 21st Century Steam. The train will be pulled by the Southern 4501, a 100-year-old locomotive engine that last ran through Macon in 1977.
"Really, this is a rolling museum," Steve Freer, the operations coordinator for the museum said. "The steam locomotive built in 1911, (with) cars probably from the 1920s all the way up to the 1950s, from the golden age of railroading. So, everything is historic about this whole experience, really."
The Nancy Hanks Special will be a four-hour, round trip ride to Tennille, in Washington County.
It will run on September 26 and 27, departing from the Terminal Station at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Tickets start at $50. They can be upgraded to deluxe coach or the observation car. There will be snack car and gift shop aboard the train.
