Perry's 'Deck the Paws' event offering holiday cheer — and a chance to make a difference. Here's how

On Saturday, you can bring your pet family to Deck The Paws happening at Heritage Park in Perry starting at 10 a.m.

MACON, Ga. — There's a holiday event happening in Perry, but it does more than help generate some Christmas cheer. On Saturday, Perry's "Deck the Paws" event will also help raise money for dogs and cats who need a home.

Amanda Sims from the Houston County Humane Society says you can expect food trucks, pictures with Santa and an adoption booth for those who want to bring home a new pet this holiday season.

"So we're gonna have Grinch pictures, Santa pictures, bounce houses for kids, arts and crafts for kids," Sims said. "We've got food trucks. We've got 26 vendors."

Sims brought in a dog from the Humane Society named Darrell or "Dee" who was found on the side of a dirt road in Marshallville last New Year's Eve. She says Dee will be there on Saturday.

The "Deck The Paws" kicks off at the Heritage Oaks Park in Perry on Saturday and lasts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is free but you will have to pay $10 if you want a picture with The Grinch and your pet.

During the event, Sims says some officers from the Perry Police Department plan to come out. Cpl. Gary Turley and his K-9 dog will offer a demonstration showing the type of work they do together.

"At 1 p.m., we will have Perry police department come out with their narcotics dog mats," Sims said. "And his handler, Corporal Turley they'll be there to do a demonstration."

Then after this Houston County Animal Control will give people tips on what you can do if you lose your dog or find a lost dog on the road.

There will also be a pet costume contest that owners can enter their pets in at the event. Sims says owners can win prizes like a gift card to a company called Puppers Pets.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome to enjoy some holiday fun for a good cause.
