GREENSBORO, N.C. — Halloween is around the corner, and as much as children love to get candy, some aren't so keen on the costumes, eerie music, and scary decorations. If you have a little one, how can you help make Halloween more fun for them? Here are a few ideas.
Use Halloween decorations that are festival and friendly, such as smiling pumpkins, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and colorful lights. You can still channel the spirit of Halloween without the scariness.
Before Halloween night, it would be a great idea to practice trick-or-treating. This can take the scariness away from visiting homes. You can practice with your little one saying trick-or-treat at the different doors in your home, such as the front door, back door, side door, and different bedrooms. Have them practice opening their trick-or-treat bag after they say trick or treat, and you give them a piece of candy, sticker, or small toy.
If you think your little one isn't quite ready for trick-or-treating, here are a few suggestions. You could trick or treat at a couple of friends' or neighbors' homes while it's twilight. You could have a fun family Halloween scavenger hunt at home, where they find treats. You can also have a costume parade at home. You can bake cookies or decorate a cake with a Halloween theme. Or, your little one can help you pass candy to the children with friendly costumes while you pass out the candy to the kids wearing the scary theme ones.
