Seasonal Savings: Tips on how to keep those Christmas lights working each year

There are ways you can make your strand of lights working season after season.

MACON, Ga. — The shelves are stocked, and if you want the best selection of Christmas décor, now is the time to get it - especially if it involves lights.

So, here are some tips to ensure you keep those new lights you buy this year, working year after year.

First things first: LED lights generally last longer but cost more upfront.

At Lowe's, traditional incandescent bulbs are just $3.98 for a box of 100, while a box of LED lights is $8.98. At Home Depot, traditional incandescent bulbs are just $3.48 for a box of 100, while a box of LED lights is $9.98. A box of incandescent bulbs will last one to two seasons. While LED bulbs should last four to five seasons.

As you put up the lights, you always want to seal any exposed plug or joint to keep moisture out. This could be using a cover on plugs or taping any exposed plug end with electrical tape.

Whether the lights are LED or incandescent, you never want to use fasteners that pierce the wiring. The wires inside are thin and very fragile. For the same reason, you should always handle the cords with care when taking down your light.

Packing the lights up properly can add life as well. Never wrap them too tightly, and always store them in a cool and dry location.

Lastly, keep those extra bulbs that come in the packs; more often than not, all you need to do is replace a bulb, and your strand will be working again!
