PUTNAM COUNTY, Ga. — For many families, Labor Day weekend is the last chance to hit the lake or river to soak up in the sun.
Game Wardens Jaron Hollinshead and Wes Freeman want people to stay safe. But they say crowded lakes can mean extra danger.
"Choose someone that is responsible, especially on Labor Day. Choose someone you know that is going to make the best decision for your group," Hollinshead says.
Hollinshead says to be careful when on the boat. With labor-day drinking, he says being in the heat can make the effects of alcohol hit harder.
Hollinshead says he catches many drunk drivers on the lake and many do not know that the water and sun can affect you.
"Alcohol especially in the sun and on the water there's an actual effect and it's a heightened effect," he says.
Hollinshead says to watch for other boaters who may be under the influence. He also says to drive on the right side of the road.
"A lot of people don't know that the wrong way exists on the lake. It works just like the highway and we tell people that every time. There is a right lane and a left lane," he says.
Freeman wants children and families to be smart when on the water. He says to always follow the basics. He says to make sure anyone 12 and under has on a life vest. He also says to get your boat lights on at sundown.
"Have situational awareness when you are on the lake. Always keep your head on a swivel. Be proactive for other boaters," Freeman says.
Another really important tip from Hollinshead and Freeman is to not trust the water.
"We see drownings because people trust water way too much. They do not believe in the life jacket. I feel like a lot of people don't know their limits when they enter the water," Hollinshead says.
