Kentucky woman credits bank employee with saving her life after car catches fire

Within minutes, Dawn Simpson's car was engulfed in flames.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dawn Simpson is lucky to be alive after her car caught on fire last week at the Chase Bank on Bardstown Road and credits a bank employee with saving her life.

Simpson said she had just put gas in her car at Costco before stoping at the bank to use the ATM. Shortly after arriving, an employee told her that her car was smoking.

"As soon as I pulled in, it started smoking and I hit the call button," she recalled. "To me, it didn't register, and I couldn't get out because I was so close to the median."

The next thing she knew, her car was on fire. That's when the Chase employee, Alan, sprang into action.

Within minutes, Dawn Simpson's car was engulfed in flames.

"I got up, ran to the window to see what I was dealing with, and jumped right into action," he said.

When Alan ran outside, he said he noticed Simpson messing with money and urged her to get out of the car using the passenger side of her vehicle.

After she exited the car, the two stood about 15 yards away from the car. Alan did another heroic action by running to the nearest fire station, which was a block away.

"I knocked on the door, and said a lady's car is on fire," he said. The fire department quickly went to the bank to extinguish the fire with no one suffering any injuries.

Dawn Simpson credits a Louisville bank employee with saving her life after her car erupted into flames.

Simpson is now behind the wheel of a rental car, provided by her insurance company, with a new outlook on life.

"It feels amazing just to know that they cared more about me than the bank," Dawn said. "It really restores my faith in humanity."

It's still unclear how the car caught on fire, but Simpson said she's just happy to be alive and looking for a reliable form of transportation.
