Sweet Eleanor's dessert shop opens on Poplar Street in Macon

Owner Scott Mitchell says he named the place after his grandmother and feels proud to honor her.

MACON, Ga. — One Macon business owner is making his grandmother proud with the opening of a new dessert shop named in her honor.

The new café has lots of really "sweet" menu options, and an amazing atmosphere.

Sweet Eleanor's Divine Desserts soft opened last Wednesday, and they've already seen tons of support in just a week. Several Macon-ites stopped by to grab some gelato, coffee, baked goods, cakes, and more.

We first reported on the opening of the eatery back in September, and it has come a long way since then.

Back then, Owner Scott Mitchell — who also owns the Bohemian Den store downtown — explained he was naming the place after his grandmother Eleanor, to honor her.

He said he hoped the place would be an environment where customers can come and make their own memories, like the ones with his grandmother he so fondly looks back on.

Mitchell revealed his grandmother unfortunately had passed away just a day after he had opened last week. He said that she had just celebrated her 91st birthday.

"Sweet Eleanor's is named after my grandmother. She turned 91 this last month, and she passed away last Thursday. It's been a really bittersweet time for us here, filled with a lot of happiness and sadness at the same time," he said.

Today, a beautiful mural of Eleanor sits on the righthand wall of the café and looks out over the customers.

Mitchell says despite the bittersweetness, it feels good to be open. He praised his employees and customers.

"It feels really really good. It feels like I'm paying honor to my grandmother by doing this. I've had so much fun, and I have a great group of employees. The customers have been amazing," he said.

Customers flowed in and out of the shop during our interview, lots stopping to say hello to Mitchell and wish him well. His passion for the project shone through in every greeting.

As far as the menu goes, the shop offers a little bit of everything.

"We have everything from gelato and muffins and cookies to cheesecakes and cakes to blondies and brownies. We also serve Perc coffee, and we are the only people in middle Georgia that serves Perc out of Savannah. We have a wide range of so many different things for you to try," Mitchell said.

He said you can "make your life a little bit sweeter," by coming in to grab a treat.

You can check out Sweet Eleanor's at 530 Poplar Street downtown. They will have an official opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday at 2 p.m. if you want to come grab some delicious treats!
