'Half the fun is the mystery': Macon's first underground speakeasy opens downtown

Black Cat Liquor & Libations opened near the end of April and they're already pretty booked up.

MACON, Ga. — Shhhh....Macon's first speakeasy is open downtown and reservations are filling up fast.

Black Cat Liquor & Libations opened in downtown Macon near the end of April.

They have around 45 different cocktails on their menu, ranging from classic drinks to house made cocktails. All their drinks are owner Chelsea Hughes' original recipes.

Some popular drinks include "The Shutter Island," "The Great Gatsby," and "The Mister Griswold."

Hughes says it's a tie for her favorite cocktail because while both her picks are different, she says they each bring unique tastes to the table.

"To choose a single favorite, that would be so tricky! But I think it's between the "Great Gatsby" and the "Mister Griswold" for me, both of which are very spirit forward and whisky based. One of them is vanilla and Mezcal, and the other one is bruised fresh herbs and a chartreuse and rye whiskey," she said.

She also recommended "The Shutter Island" to those visiting the speakeasy for the first time who may not know what they like. She says it's a crowd pleaser and leans on the sweeter side.

The ambiance inside the space is also alluring - the lights are dimmed and the walls are lined with antiques that add color and flair to the space.

Hughes says the vibe of the speakeasy is a little Victorian Gothic and upscale, but also relaxing and cozy.

"You get some Ella Fitzgerald and some Louis Armstrong when you walk down the stairs, and it feels upscale and secretive, and exclusive and exciting, but at the same time it's a fantastic place to sit in the corner and have a quiet conversation with a friend," she said.

In order to get a spot in the speakeasy, you have to do a little sleuthing. Hughes says part of the fun is figuring out how to get inside.

"Half the fun is the mystery, so you have to kind of figure it out for yourself," she said.

She did offer a hint: follow the black cat. Visit Kinjo Kitchen + Cocktails website and the cat will lead you to where you need to go!

You do have to make reservations in advance, as the place is limited on space and tables get filled quickly. You can try to grab a walk in table if there is room to squeeze you in (and if you're nice to the staff) but it is not guaranteed.

So to play it safe, be sure to book in advance! Once you book your reservation you will get the password to get in.

And be sure to dress up! Black Cat Liquor has a dress code, so no wife beaters, crop tops, leggings, gym shorts, t-shirts or other casual/athletic wear is allowed.

Black Cat Liquor & Libations is located in the basement of your favorite Asian Fusion restaurant downtown and is open Thursday from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., and Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.
