WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — There's a new foundation in Houston County: the Community Foundation of Houston County.
Now, after getting the foundation off the ground, the Community Foundation of Houston County has given out its first grant: $10,000 to the Christian Service Center (CSC) at Sacred Heart Church, which supports families in need across certain parts of Houston County.
The center has become a lifeline for many in the community. Dianna Hollins says the center supported her when she needed it most.
"Any time I needed food, and things financially got really tough, Ms. Katee was always my go-to lady," Hollins said. "She would be like, 'Come on in, Dianna, we got what you need, we are here to help you.'"
Katee Dugas, the center’s director, highlighted the importance of the grant, noting that it will allow them to expand their support to cover items not included in government assistance programs, such as cleaning and paper products.
"Food stamps do not cover paper products and cleaning products," Dugas said. "It is essential for families that they keep their residences clean. And how do you do that without soap and water? Without cleaning products?"
The center — which relies heavily on donations, grants, and volunteers — offers services including food, clothing, and financial assistance. Over the last six months, she says the center has helped more than 900 families with basic necessities.
Paul Travitsky, another recipient of the center’s aid, recounted how the support he received inspired him to give back as a volunteer.
"I got back on my feet and I turned it around and said, 'These guys helped me, I see a need,' and I figured I can go and help them," he said. "It really was the best decision of my life."
The grant from the Community Foundation aims to ensure that the center can continue providing for those in need. In the past six months, they've spent more than $37,000, most of that used to alleviate utility bills.
The Sacred Heart Christian Service Center is located at 136 Northview Ave. in Warner Robins and is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They encourage direct donations to help keep their shelves stocked and their services running.
The Community Foundation of Houston County was inspired by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, which is based in Macon. However, they are separate organizations.
