How to grow, care for poinsettias

Remember: Poinsettias are mildly toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, so keep them away from your fur babies.

MACON, Ga. — Christmastime means putting up the tree and plenty of twinkling lights, but for some the decorations aren’t complete without a special flower – the poinsettia.

Meteorologist Courteney Jacobazzi has more on the perfect weather for poinsettias and how to keep them bright and beautiful through the holidays.

According to the University of Minnesota extension, poinsettias thrive in warm and wet soils with temperatures between 65-70 F, which makes early fall in Central Georgia the perfect time to get them growing so they’re ready to go just in time for the holidays.

When it comes to caring for them, poinsettias need a good bit of sunlight, so be sure to place them where they can soak up the sunshine for several hours – either inside or outside.

The flowers do well where the temperatures are mild and don’t fluctuate greatly. They also require moist soil to keep them bright and beautiful all-day long.

And remember… poinsettias are mildly toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, so keep them away from your fur babies.
