How are inductees chosen?
An individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination in order to be eligible, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“Nominee ballots are sent to an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, historian, and members of the music industry,” Rock Hall officials explain. “Factors such as an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration.”
Who is already inducted?
Since the first induction ceremony in 1986, there have been hundreds of people immortalized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Among the 16 honored in the first ceremony were Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ray Charles. The most inductees in one year came in 1987 when 22 were added to the Rock Hall.

Why isn't Cleveland hosting the induction ceremony?
Cleveland, which is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, hasn't hosted an induction ceremony since 2021.
"We are honored that this November’s induction ceremony in New York will coincide with two milestones in music culture; the 90th birthday of Willie Nelson and the 50th Anniversary of the birth of Hip Hop," said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.
After the Rock Hall announced plans back in 2016 to rotate induction ceremonies between Cleveland and New York, Sykes has now hinted that future inductions could expand to other destinations.
"And hopefully one day other cities like London and Nashville," Sykes told Forbes in an interview last November. "My point of view was it's time to change that. The Rock Hall of Fame should live where the artists and the music industry is and those are those cities. And for me, Los Angeles will now will be a regular stop for the hall."
The 2022 induction was held in Los Angeles.
Future plans for the Rock Hall in Cleveland
A $135 million expansion project is now underway at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, which includes a 50,000 square-foot addition to the existing pyramid structure. See more of the planned changes HERE.
