Macon city leaders discuss the future of rail travel

Mayor Robert Reichert says high-speed rail travel is still at least a decade or two away

MACON, Ga. — If you travel on I-75 up to Atlanta, you know how long of a commute it can be depending on traffic.

Now, there is a push once again to get you to Atlanta with no traffic involved.

In Central Georgia, you can travel by bus, plane, and even in your own car, but currently a high-speed train up to Atlanta is not one of those options.

"I feel like the city needs that. It would be really convenient for the city," Kevin Rose said.

Rose says fighting traffic to see his family in Atlanta sometimes makes the trip not worth it.

"Three days out of the week, you know, you might be stuck in one spot, it takes you 45 minutes to get somewhere and you may not get to where you need to be until two hours and 45 minutes later," he said.

Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert is hoping to give Terminal Station on Cherry Street new life.

"The station was acquired under the Ellis administration to be a multi-modal hub, to feature passenger rail as well as regular street transportation," Reichert said.

He hopes to see a project like Florida's Brightline take hold in Central Georgia.

"The more people who advocate for it and support it and express support for it, the more it tends to take off and gain speed and momentum," Reichert said.

To make that happen, Macon has joined forces with cities between here and Atlanta so they can push even harder to make high-speed train travel a reality, even if the effort could take at least a decade to become a reality.

"I think the future of our community lies in embracing transportation options and finding ways to make it easier for people to get around," Reichert said.

"I think it would be an excellent idea," Rose said.

Reichert says Atlanta is continually growing and he says as the city grows people, people will need a way to escape the city and come to Macon whether it be for work or leisure.
