SANDERSVILLE, Ga. — A Deepstep man was arrested Monday after he allegedly burglarized two banks.

According to a post from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Matthew Stephens was caught after a brief chase and search warrant.

Investigators say the Citizens Bank and George D. Warthens Bank were burglarized Sunday evening. When they found Stephens, he drove away from them.

The brief car chase was ended after deputies found it was too unsafe to continue.

On Monday morning, a deputy saw the same vehicle at a home in Deepstep.

After Sandersville Police and Washington County deputies executed a search warrant, Stephens was arrested.

He’s charged with burglary and theft by taking. Deputies say other charges are pending as their investigation continues.
