Warner Robins nonprofit jammed by Facebook algorithm

Two Nine Productions says their ad was blocked on the social media site for being "related to politics or an issue of national importance"

Two Nine Productions is a filmmaking nonprofit in Warner Robins, so when they were asked to put together a tribute to a retiring soldier, it was no problem.

They filmed messages from Master Sergeant Donald Erven's family and friends thanking him for his 33 years of service.

But Two Nine wanted to punch it up a bit, so they reached out to some local and federal legislators.

"I want to say hello to you, and congratulations on a fantastic career," said Georgia Senator John F. Kennedy.

Senator Larry Walker told Erven, "I'm so grateful for your patriotism and your love of country."

Two Nine posted the video to Facebook and tried to use it in a Facebook ad.

That's where Two Nine director Anthony Croupe says they ran into a problem with Facebook's algorithms.

"It counted ours as a political or off-topic of national importance ad," Croupe said.

According to a message from the social media giant, Facebook blocked the ad for being "related to politics or an issue of national importance."

Croupe says the ad was never political.

"We're not saying 'oh, go for this candidate or go for this issue,'" he said. "We're just like 'hey this guy did an awesome job, he did it for 33 years, we just want to congratulate him.'"

Their experience might not be all that uncommon.

We sat down with our own social media expert, 13WMAZ Digital Manager Andrew Plaskowsky, who says Two Nine likely got flagged by a new algorithm change Facebook rolled out around May.

"This is kind of Facebook's response to calls for them to be more transparent," he said.

He says the company's goal is to keep better track of political advertisements and who's behind them, but their definition of political speech is pretty broad.

"If there's a local cake shop that is doing an advertisement for their business, and it includes a photo of a cake congratulating a representative that's running for mayor, that can be considered a political ad now," said Plaskowsky.

Joseph Kelly, the owner of Two Nine, said Facebook informed them they could use the video in an ad if they registered as a political advertiser with Facebook, but that would put their nonprofit status at risk.

Plaskowsky said so far, Facebook has not announced a timeline for how long they expect these broad algorithms to last.
