Monroe County Sheriff's Office invests in two new drones for deputies

"The law we don't want to violate, we don't want to violate anyone's Fourth Amendment rights, we don't use it for an investigative tool."

Officers at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office are putting together their new eyes in the sky.

"Basic law enforcement can go anywhere, from looking to a bad guy that's run off, to a young kid that's wandered off," says Kurt Seckinger, Monroe County Sheriff's Office Deputy.

The sheriff's office invested $16,000 in two drones, but before they get them in the sky, they are sending officers to the Georgia Public Safety Training Center to learn how to use them and what they can't use them for.

"The law we don't want to violate, we don't want to violate anyone's Fourth Amendment rights, we don't use it for an investigative tool," says John Hutcheson, GPSTC public information officer.

The drones help authorities look at situations before they put officers on the ground. "We can use it in a much more timely manner and pool our resources and work safer, not harder," says Hutcheson.

Two Monroe County officers plan to take their training course within a few weeks. Once they are trained, they take a certification license to be able to fly the drones, and then a separate certification to fly them in different areas within the county.

After that, they are ready for takeoff. "It'll all be accessible charged and ready to go and by having numerous officers available to do it that's trained in and respond immediately," says Seckinger.

The first two deputies will be trained on November 7, then eight more will be trained on later dates. This will ensure that there is an officer on each shift that knows how to work the drones.
